Philosopher Ben Bayer addresses the FDA’s refusal to approve an inexpensive text for COVID-19. The test can be done at home and yields results in about fifteen minutes. The FDA “justifies” its position by noting that if the tests produce false negatives, then contagious individuals may unknowingly spread the virus. Apparently, the agency believes that it is better for everyone to remain in the dark. Bayer writes:
Unfortunately, the FDA’s attitude toward this controversy is not an accident of the current pandemic; it’s a problem endemic to the agency itself. Its existence robs consenting adults of their right to use their own knowledge to decide what to ingest into their own bodies.
