In late September, William Foege, a former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sent a letter to Robert Redfield, the current director of the CDC. In the letter, Foege calls on Redfield to “face the truth.” In a period of six months, the CDC has gone from the gold standard in public health to a disgraced agency. Foege believes that Redfield should go public and explain how and why the federal government has failed to deal with the pandemic effectively or responsibly.
You could upfront, acknowledge the tragedy of responding poorly, apologize for what has happened and your role in acquiescing…. Don’t shy away from the fact this has been an unacceptable toll on our country. It is a slaughter and not just a political dispute.
Foege acknowledges that going public would likely cost Redfield his job. But, he tells Redfield, he should do what is right and expose the political interference that has turned the pandemic into an absolute tragedy.
